Keynote speaker: Loukas Tsoukalis

Loukas Tsoukalis was born in Athens in 1950. He studied economics and international relations at the University of Manchester, the College of Europe in Bruges, and the University of Oxford where he obtained his doctoral degree. He taught for many years at Oxford University (St. Catherine’s College and St. Antony’s College). He later became Professor at the European Institute of the London School of Economics and Political Science (Eleftherios Venizelos Chair). He also taught at the European University Institute in Florence and at Sciences Po in Paris. He is Former Special Adviser to the President of the European Commission and member of the High Level Group of the European Commission on the Modernization of Higher Education (2012-2013).

Tsoukalis is presently Professor of European Integration at the University of Athens and President of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP). He is visiting Professor at King’s College, London and the College of Europe, Bruges. He is also member of advisory councils and think tanks in several European countries.

He is the author of many books and articles on European integration and international political economy and is regular contributor to the Sunday edition of the newspaper Kathimerini. His books include The New European Economy and What Kind of Europe?, published by Oxford University Press, in several editions and translations and The Unhappy State of the Union: Europe Needs a New Grand Bargain (Patakis,2014), released in English by the Policy Network and later translated into French, German, Greek, Polish and Spanish. Professor Tsoukalis is Commander of the Order of the Phoenix of the Hellenic Republic.
